Following an invitation from the Government of the Republic of Kenya to the African Union to observe the forthcoming General Elections scheduled for 9 August 2022, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, has authorised the deployment of a Pre-election Assessment Mission to Kenya from 16 – 20 May 2022.
The Mission comprises members of the Panel of the Wise, independent electoral experts, and technical staff from the AU Commission. Importantly, the Mission is deployed jointly with members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC).
The joint AU-COMESA-EAC Mission to Kenya will consider the state of preparedness for the 9 August 2022 General Elections and the overall context in which the polls will take place. It will engage in consultations and dialogue with key political and electoral stakeholders in Kenya to promote peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections.
The Mission is in conformity with the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, the 2002 AU Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Missions, and the 2008 Framework of Cooperation between the AU and RECs/RMs on peace and security issues in Africa.
