The African Union appeals for the provision of humanitarian assistance to the Central African Republic

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, November 18, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Jean PING, is deeply concerned about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR), following the clashes that took place in September 2011 between two political and military movements in the town of Bria, in the North East of the country. These clashes resulted in many casualties and substantial material damage; they also displaced thousands of people.

Considering the humanitarian situation that continues to obtain on the ground, the Chairperson of the Commission urgently appeals to the AU Member States and partners to demonstrate solidarity with the CAR, its people and Government, by providing the necessary assistance to alleviate the suffering of the affected people.

The Chairperson of the Commission urges all the parties concerned in CAR to spare no efforts in implementing the different agreements reached, in particular to speed up the implementation of the DDR programme and other related aspects.
