Statement by Mr. Said Djinnit, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa, on the bombing attacks in Nigeria

DAKAR, Senegal, May 22, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Mr. Said Djinnit, expresses his profo und outrage at, and condemns in the strongest terms, the double bombin! g attacks that occurred in a market in the city of Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria, on 20 May 2014, resulting in the deaths of more than one hundred persons and scores of others injured.

Mr. Djinnit extends his solidarity and sympathy to the victims, their bereaved families as well as the government and the people of Nigeria. He urged that the perpetrators of these heinous and cowardly attacks against innocent civilians should be swiftly brought to justice.

The large-scale and devastating losses of lives caused by repeated indiscriminate killings cannot continue. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa reiterates his appeal for a regional cooperation towards decisive response to this threat.

Mr. Djinnit also reiterates the commitment of th! e United Nations to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to tackle terrorism threat within the framework of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

Mr. Djinnit visited Nigeria from 12-15 May 2014 as the High-Level Representative of the Secretary General to discuss with Government officials the assistance that the UN could provide in support of ongoing efforts to seek the safe release of the abducted girls in Chibok.
