Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General on the elections in Liberia
NEW YORK, November 17, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Secretary-General congratulates the Liberian people for exercising their right to vote in the presidential run-off election on 8 November. He commends the national authorities for conducting free, fair and transparent elections.
The Secretary-General deplores the violence which took place on 7 November and welcomes the creation of a Special Independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident.
The Secretary-General calls upon the Liberian stakeholders to accept the outcome of the elections and to work together to resolve any outstanding issues. He emphasizes the importance of a continued dialogue on national reconciliation.
