Said Djinnit, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Great Lakes Region met with President Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo in Brazzaville to discuss issues related to peace and security in the region, including most recent developments. The Special Envoy, who had participated in the Summit of the leaders of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Luanda, Angola, on 14 June, took this opportunity to brief President Sassou Nguesso on the recent initiative of the representatives of the guarantors of the Peace, Security and cooperation (PSC) Framework Agreement for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region to reinvigorate ongoing efforts aimed at neutralizing illegal armed groups still operating in eastern DRC. The two personalities also discussed ongoing efforts to support dialogue processes in Burundi and the DRC.
The Special Envoy also briefed President Sassou Nguesso on status of progress in the implementation of the PSC Framework Agreement and towards convening the next high level meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism in the region composed of Heads of State and Government of signatory countries.
“As part of my consultations with the leaders of the region, I came to Brazzaville to consult President Sassou Nguesso on ways to overcome challenges towards the full implementation of commitments taken under the PSC Framework”, said Said Djinnit, who added that he and “the President stressed the importance of the countries in the region to remain committed to the objectives, as well as the letter and spirit of the 2006 ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region and the 2013 Addis Ababa Framework Agreement, its sister instrument”.
