The Philippine Embassy in Jordan, represented by Cultural Attaché Ms. Elijah Ang-Encarnacion, participated in the 4th Middle East and North African (MENA) Region Environmental Law Scholars’ Conference held on 27 February 2023 at the School of Law, University of Jordan.
The conference was organized by the Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in Middle East and North African Universities (ASSELLMU), and the faculty and students of the School of Law of the University of Jordan. The United Nations Environment Programme sponsored the conference, along with SADER Legal Publishing, a leading publishing house in the Middle East; and in partnership with the Rule of Law Programme Middle East & North Africa, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a German political party foundation, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair on Environmental Law at Hamad bin Khalifa University, Doha, Qatar; and the Jordanian Society for Climate and Sustainable Development.
The goal of the conference is to strengthen biodiversity law practice, education, and implementation, in accordance with the attainment of the 1991 Arab Declaration on Environment and Development, for the protection, preservation, and safeguarding of the environment and cultural heritages in this region. It is also an opportunity to provide an intellectual marketplace for leading scholars, researchers, and diplomats to exchange ideas, explore common grounds, and mentor the next generation of government administrators, environment advocates and UN leaders to foster teaching, research, and international collaboration on environmental law across all universities in the region. As with the previous conferences, they will continue the discussions on the possibility of integrating biodiversity and environmental law teachings into new and existing courses in the universities.
This conference is the fourth to be held following the first three conferences held in Doha (Qatar) in November 2018, Settat (Morocco) in November 2019; and Doha (Qatar) in November 2021.
