VIENNA, Austria, June 23, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Kurz showed himself very concerned about the confirmation of the death sentences against a great number of members of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, among them former President Mohammed Mursi. “Austria strictly opposes the death penalty as inhuman and barbaric. Moreover we expect, that Egyptian justice adhere to international rule of law standards in order to guarantee a fair trial. Egypt should suspend the death penalty as soon as possible – in analogy to the EU’s demand – that would be an important step”, said Sebastian Kurz.
Kurz is continuing his stance, which he already had clearly expressed to Egyptian business partners, especially President Al-Sisi and Minister of Foreign Affairs Shoukry during his Egypt visit on 20 and 21 May. “We will closely monitor the further developments in Egypt. Thereby upholding international human rights standards is of utmost importance”, Sebastian Kurz closed.
