This year marks the first Africa Day For School Feeding highlighting the African Union coming together to recognize school meals as the world’s most widely-used social safety net.
The Government of Egypt announced that a national school feeding strategy is a current priority on the state’s agenda. The overall objective of the strategy is to provide guidance on how to develop and implement an expanded national school feeding programme that will eventually cover all government schools across the country, in the context of both, acting as a productive safety net, as well as a fiscally sustainable investment in human capital, to fit in the government’s endeavour to achieve “Education for all.”
The Egyptian Strategy on School Feeding is aligned with the 2030 agenda in particular SDG2 on ending hunger, achieving food security and improving nutrition.
WFP in Egypt is supporting more than half a million children and their families through school meals projects, dedicated especially for those who are most in need. School meals provide a critical safety net, encouraging more regular attendance in schools and are a key investment in millions of people’s futures, local economies and reducing hunger across the globe.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 80 countries.
