Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI stresses importance of press freedom and restraint
ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, November 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) has observed, for some days now, worrisome developments on the media front, with journalists being called in for questioning in connection with articles they wrote.
UNOCI would like to appeal to the Ivorian authorities, media regulatory bodies and media professionals to show wisdom during this sensitive period in the history of their country. They should show restraint and moderation in their acts and writings, especially because the post-crisis period and upcoming election campaign for the legislative polls can be times of pressure in which tensions are heightened.
UNOCI invites all parties concerned to rise above the situation, to bear in mind the higher interests of the Ivorian people, and to remain aware of the need to consolidate social cohesion and national reconciliation, which are guarantees of lasting peace.
