The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU), H. E. Ambassador Smail Chergui received today a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, led by H.E Amb. Tariq bin Ali Al Ansari, Director of International Technical Cooperation.
The two sides reviewed the state of peace and security in Africa. In this regard, they highlighted several issues of common concern, including Darfur (Sudan), Somalia, Libya and North Mali, as well as the impact of the conflict in Yemen on African neighboring countries.
The Commissioner lauded the initiative of Qatar to pursue investment and development cooperation with Ethiopia and other African countries, considering the nexus between peace, security and development and the need to address the root causes of radicalization and extremism in Africa.
Finally, the two sides agreed to scale up their cooperation in the area of peace and security and recommended the early signing of the MoU between the two parties as discussed during the Commissioner’s visit to Doha in November 2015.
