Canada Concerned About Electoral Process in Democratic Republic of Congo
OTTAWA, Canada, December 12, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“The Government of Canada continues to closely follow the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Canada is extremely concerned about reports of irregularities in the election process.
“The release of preliminary results by polling station on December 9, 2011, is a step forward, but we strongly urge government and election officials to provide more transparency to the election and counting process. We support the calls of international observers who demand the electoral commission post final results at each voting office.
“Canada continues to urge all parties to exercise calm and restraint, and for all political actors to avoid inciting violence or taking action that might lead to a further deterioration of the security situation.
“We call on the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to direct its security forces to act impartially, responsibly and with restraint while carrying out their duties.
“Free, fair and transparent elections are crucial for peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.”
