AU and ECA mark International Anti-corruption Day in Dakar, Senegal
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, December 13, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) and the Governance and Public Administration Division of the Economic Commission for Africa (GPAD-UNECA) jointly organized Commemoration events for International Anti-corruption Day on 9 December 2011 in Dakar, Senegal. The activities marking the Commemoration included an Exhibition, Roundtable Discussion and Media briefing.
The opening ceremony for the commemoration event was presided over by the Minister of State for External Relations and Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Senegal, Maitre Madicke Niang, with speeches from the Minister, the Chair of the AUABC and the representative of the UNDP in Senegal. Also, a Roundtable Discussion on the theme “Fighting Corruption and strengthening Integrity Systems in the New Millennium in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges,” was organized, which brought together senior government officials (including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice), parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations, civil society organizations and the media.
The event also witnessed the exhibition of anti-corruption materials put together by the AUABC, UNECA and other stakeholders – with carefully selected and targeted anti-corruption messages and slogans. It was all crowned by a Press Conference during which the honourable members of the AU Advisory Board on Corruption were able to further elaborate on the importance forging partnerships with all segments of society in the fight against corruption. Participants at the commemoration wore colourful anti-corruption t-shirts which added glamour to the occasion.
Overall, the commemoration event was indeed a huge success in that it increased awareness among participants about the ills of corruption and the need for all segments of society to be actively involved in fighting the menace. It also provided an opportunity to revisit various issues relating to the fight against corruption and strengthening integrity systems on the continent.
