African business agenda 27-30 June 2011

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT WEEK

Monday June 27

  • African Union summit grinds into action in Equatorial Guinea (to Friday)
  • Naspers full year results. Africa’s largest media company, worth $23 billion, is expected to report a 20 percent rise in earnings, seen as a disappointing performance after years of breakneck growth. (0500 GMT)
  • South Africa’s powerful COSATU trade union federation holds annual “strategy” meeting. Discussions likely to include Wal-Mart’s takeover of local retailer Massmart, and the ANC Youth League’s push for nationalisation of the mines -a policy that would hurt labour as much as entrenched capital.
  • South African power utility Eskom releases full-year results. Expected to update on power supply prospects in Africa’s biggest economy. (1100 GMT)

Thursday June 30

  • South Africa May credit and money supply data. Private sector credit extension has been weak suggesting households are still under pressure (1000 GMT)
  • South Africa May Producer Price Index. PPI slowed to 6.6 pct y/y in April (0930 GMT)
  • South Africa May Trade data. The trade account is expected to show fairly small deficits as exports recover and imports remain sluggish (1200 GMT)
  • Zambia June inflation data. Annual inflation quickened to 8.9 percent in May (1230 GMT)
  • Kenya, Uganda inflation data for June due from June 29. CPI hit 12.95 percent in Kenya in May, and 16.0 percent in Uganda.
