Spain / African Union / Chairperson Receives Credentials of The New Permanent Observer of The Kingdom of Spain to The African Union
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, December 20, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, received in his office at the AU Headquarters, on Saturday, 17 December 2011, the credentials of H.E. Mr Miguel Angel Fernandez-Palacios, the new Permanent Observer of the Kingdom of Spain to the African Union.
Welcoming the new Permanent Observer, the Chairperson expressed his satisfaction with the partnership between the African Union and Spain and acknowledge with gratitude the significant financial contribution made by Spain to support the activities of the AU.
Ambassador Fernandez-Palacios, on his part, stressed the importance his country attaches to its relations with the African Union and its Member States and promised to do all in his ability to create opportunities for the enhancement of cooperation ties between both parties.
“It is an honour to be received by you today,” the Ambassador told the Chairperson. “We are convinced of the importance of the role played by the African Union in Africa and the world and we would like to assure you of our total support for the great job you are doing,” he added.
The Chairperson and the Spanish diplomat exchanged views on several issues of mutual interest, including the situation in Somalia.
In that regard, the Spanish Ambassador highlighted the central role played by the AU in Somalia and paid tribute to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) for its commendable efforts towards the restoration of peace, security and stability and the alleviation of the suffering of the Somali people.
“We are convinced that any resolution of the Somali crisis must pass through the African Union. That is why we are stepping up our financial support for the AU,” the Spanish Ambassador emphasized.
Ambassador Fernandez-Palacios extended an invitation to Chairperson Ping to visit Spain in the near future and the Chairperson graciously accepted the invitation.
