ITALY-LIBYA: Reactivation of the Treaty of Friendship
ROME, Italy, December 16, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Treaty of Friendship between Italy and Libya, the result of Italian diplomatic efforts that recognized the Libyan people’s aspirations of democracy and freedom, is to be reactivated after a “suspension” associated with the “priorities” of the “new Libya”. The announcement came from Premier Mario Monti at the end of a meeting with leader of the Libyan National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdul Jalil, who confirmed the treaty’s reactivation and praised former Premier Silvio Berlusconi and Ministers Franco Frattini and Ignazio La Russa, who “from the beginning”, he said, had “supported” the revolution.
Monti, who will visit Libya in early January, said that Italy “assures the maximum speed in the use of unfrozen Libyan funds”. Italy has unfrozen the sum of €600 million and is “ready to ensure immediate assistance in terms of security, infrastructure and energy for the benefit of the people”. The Premier also asserted that he had “agreed” with Jalil on the importance of procedures for the recognition and certification of the loans advanced by Italian firms and that it is possible to use the unfrozen funds for that purpose”. After his meeting with Premier Monti, Jalil was received at the Presidential Palace by Head of State Giorgio Napolitano. Minister Giulio Terzi also attended the meeting.
