The African Union welcomes the continuous progress in the transition process in Tunisia
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, December 14, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, welcomes the continuous progress in the ongoing transitional process in Tunisia, especially the election, on 12 December 2011, of Mr. Moncef Marzouki as President of the Republic, following the adoption, on 10 December, of the draft bill on the provisional setup of the public powers, considered as a mini Constitution for an interim period, pending the adoption of a final Constitution. He congratulates Mr. Marzouki on assuming the Presidency after he was sworn in on 13 December.
The Chairperson of the Commission highly values these developments, which reflect the genuine commitment of the Tunisian authorities to move forward on the path of democratization and good governance. The concrete steps taken so far by the Tunisian authorities will pave the way for a smooth conclusion of the transition.
The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the commitment of the AU to support the transitional process in Tunisia by all possible means in order to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Tunisian people, and encourages the Tunisian authorities and stakeholders to persevere in their efforts.
