ROME, Italy, November 24, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi had a telephone conversation today with Libya’s new Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Anshur Ben Khaial.

Minister Terzi warmly congratulated his counterpart on the formation of the Libyan transition government and reiterated that Italy will give its full support to the new Libya’s progress towards democracy. He reminded Minister Ben Khaial of the deep respect felt by all Italians for the supreme tribute paid in blood by the Libyan people to free themselves of the dictatorship.

Terzi underscored that Italy intends to engage at all levels in helping to strengthen the new Libyan institutions and make a concrete contribution to the country’s economic recovery. He referred, for example, to the most recent examples of Italian action to foster the activation of a growing number of channels for collaboration. Minister Terzi also mentioned the imminent re-opening of the Italian Consulate in Benghazi and Alitalia’s plan to introduce a direct Rome-Benghazi flight in the early months of 2012.

Minister Ben Khaial thanked Terzi warmly for Italy’s support for the Libyan people and for the many and various initiatives put in place by Italy. He said too that he hoped to meet Minister Terzi at the earliest possible date.
