Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA)

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provided farmers with 10 ponds for tilapia farming and for the use of pond water as fertilizer, as well as with circulation mechanisms and 3000 tilapias, in the district of Seberi in Kollo, located 32 km from Niamey, the capital of Niger.

The project aims to set an example for the “integrated production facilities” that were introduced by the Government of Niger and supported through pilot projects and that bring rice and fish farming together; to support agricultural/animal production and employment by increasing the number of the said facilities in the region; and to keep young people away from terrorism and help them engage in production.

The ponds built in 10 different rice fields, as well as tilapias, fish feed, and other supporting equipment, were delivered to the Rice Farmers’ Cooperative of Seberi at a ceremony attended by Hama Tahirou, Secretary-General of Kollo Municipality; Amadou Abdou, Administrative Representative of Kouré Canton; Béto Ousmane, Secretary-General of the District Governorship of Kollo; and Amadou Amadou, TİKA’s Office Assistant in Niamey.

In his opening statements, Amadou Bonkano, Chairperson of the Rice Farmers’ Cooperative, noted that they would be able to carry out rice and fish farming activities together thanks to the project and that the equipment provided by TİKA would contribute to their activities greatly.

Béto Ousmane, Secretary-General of the District Governorship of Kollo, thanked TİKA and the people of Turkey and said that they hoped TİKA’s activities in the region would continue.

In his opening statements, Amadou Amadou, TİKA’s Office Assistant in Niamey, noted that TİKA has implemented more than 100 sustainable projects that directly touch people’s lives in Niger since 2013. He added that this project aimed to increase the number of integrated production facilities that bring fish and rice farming together and to add value to agricultural/animal production in Niger.
