Niger: president Tandja calls for general elections

Niger’s president, Mamadou Tandja, has made a decree calling for general elections on October the 20, 2009 to renew the parliament.

French news agency Agence France-Presse reports quoting Niger’s state radio station.

The electoral campaign “will last from September 28 to October 18”, the same French news agency reports quoting Niger’s state radio station which added that the opposition has already stated that it would boycott the elections and called for demonstrations.

Last tuesday president Tandja has promulgated a new constitution that gives him the possibility to stand for re-election “and then seek unlimited mandates after a highly controversial referendum held on August 4”.
