The inauguration ceremony of the Project for Improvement of Access to Safe Water in Bugesera District took place in Musenyi sector, Bugesera District on November 15. The Government of Japan provided USD 74,150 for the project, which was implemented by Rwanda Environmental Conservation Organization (RECOR). Under the project, 30 bamboo water tanks and 2 water kiosks were newly constructed in Rusagara, Gatare, Gakurazo and Nunga villages. This project will realize the improvement of water supply and hygiene in this area. This will also lead to women’s participation in income generating activities and allow children to have time to go to school while reducing the time spent on water drawing labour.
H.E. Mr. Takayuki Miyashita, Ambassador of Japan to Rwanda, said in his remarks, “Today, I am delighted to observe that all water tanks and kiosks work perfectly. This whole project has almost 18,000 beneficiaries in Musenyi Sector. However, water per se is not enough. Water is life. Thus clean and safe water is necessary. Therefore, I am happy that the Government of Japan contributed to the improvement of people’s well-being and health standard through this water project. Please maintain these water facilities well for your future generation.”
The Chairperson of RECOR, Ms. Mary Katushabe, appreciated the assistance of the Government of Japan. The Vice Mayor of Bugesera, Ms. Priscille Uwiragiye, thanked the Government of Japan for choosing Bugesera to implement the water project. She said that water tanks were constructed in Gakurazo and Nunga villages and water kiosks were constructed in Rusagara and Gatare villages and the previous unsaintly condition was solved thanks to the Government of Japan.
