Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders condemns the terrorist attack committed last night in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, which has caused many victims. His thoughts go out to the families and friends of the victims. He expresses his condolences to the Government and people of Burkina Faso.
The Embassy in Ouagadougou has sent a message to all Belgian citizens on site, asking them to stay or go home. At this stage, there is no indication of the presence of fellow citizens among the victims.
The attack on civilians reiterates the need to continue and to strengthen the international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, particularly in the Sahel region, and to support the efforts of local authorities. Belgium is ready, and is already involved in Mali in the UN mission ‘MINUSMA’ and the EU mission ‘EUTM Mali’.
Didier Reynders will soon visit the region to evaluate the situation on the ground, including the cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
