Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as President of the Republic of Kenya

Following the announcement of the  results of the Presidential election in Kenya by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), I want to congratulate Uhuru Kenyatta.
The people of Kenya have shown a strong commitment and engagement in the electoral process, strengthening democracy in the country.
I also congratulate the successful candidates, from various political parties, in the elections held for both chambers of Parliament, Women's Representatives, County Governor and County Assembly Representatives.

The IEBC has been ensuring a transparent and inclusive process of tallying the election results. The EU Election Observation Mission,  in cooperation with other Electoral Observation Missions, will continue observing tallying and the electoral complaints until the completion of the process.
All political forces should now look to the future and work together, at national and local levels, for the good of the country and the Kenyan people as a whole.
In line with the African Union, the EU expects the opposition to respect the results and to use legal means available for appeals and complaints.
Kenya is a key partner for the European Union in the region and we are committed to strengthening our partnership still further.
