Bingu wa Mutharika was elected yesterday as new president of Malawi.
He will be inaugurated today at Kamuzu Stadium.
Even though Malawi former president Bakili Muluzi has conceded defeat, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is disputing the results.
John Tembo, president of the MCP, refused to release any comment to the press.
These are the results as indicated by the Malawi Electoral Commission:
– Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) 50 seats
– Independent aspirants 11 seats
– United Democratic Front (UDF) 11 seats.
– Malawi Congress Party (MCP) 7 seats
– MAFUNDE party 1 seat.
Parties with no seats: Petra, PPM, MPP, CODE
News24.com reporting the Southafrican news agency SAPA, quotes John Kufuor, former Ghanaian who heads the observer group, saying: “While aspects of the process have been encouraging, there have unfortunately been shortcomings such as the belated release of the voter register and evident bias of state media, institutions and resources”.
