On September 19, commencing at 1:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Japan-Ethiopia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, on the occasion of his visit to New York to attend the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The overview is as follows.
- In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for Foreign Minister Tedros’ attendance at the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) held on August 27 and 28, and his delight to have held the first TICAD in Africa successfully. In response, Foreign Minister Tedros expressed his gratitude for Japan’s decision to hold TICAD in Africa for the first time.
- Following that, Minister Kishida announced a plan to contribute a 5.5-billion yen loan for supporting women entrepreneurs, along with explaining that there is growing interest in Ethiopia, which is maintaining high economic growth, and that he hoped to engage in strengthening Japan-Ethiopia relations through greater public-private collaboration. In response, Minister Tedros expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support, and his expectation of further private-sector investment from Japan as well.
- In addition, given that Ethiopia will assume non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from next year, the two sides exchanged views on cooperation in the international arena, including UNSC reform.
