Foreign Secretary statement on Somali elections

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said;

The British Government welcomes the decision of the President of the Federal Government of Somalia, with support of Somalia’s National Leadership Forum, to issue a decree enabling plans to be put in place for Somalia’s August 2016 elections.

This decision will allow Somalia to fulfil the commitment made by the Federal Government and Parliament that there should be no extension of the constitutionally mandated terms of Somalia’s executive and legislative bodies.

I urge all Somalis to now work with purpose and goodwill to implement a successful electoral process in August, that will showcase to the world Somalia’s commitment to build a stable future for all its citizens.
