AUEOM in Cape Verde conduct an orientation and briefing program for its observers

In line with its mandate to follow and observe the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cape Verde, The African Union (AU) Election Observer Mission (AUEOM) conducted, on 20th March 2016, at the Hotel Santiago in Praia, Cape Verde an orientation and briefing program for its members.

The short-term observers (STOs), representing institutions such as the Elections Management Bodies (EMBs), Pan-African Parliamentarians, civil society and human rights organizations, from 12 African countries participated in the orientation program.

The program addressed key aspects of the electoral process including the Cabo Verde legal framework for elections and Election Day procedures from opening of polling stations to voting and counting procedures.

Led by H.E. Sylvie Kayitesi Zainabo former Chairperson of African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), AUEOS have been on the ground since the 16th of March 2016. The objective of AUEOM is to make an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the organization and conduct of the Parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cape Verde, which are scheduled for 20 March 2016, in accordance with the national, regional and international standards for democratic elections.

Preliminary observations and recommendations of the Mission will be presented during a press conference scheduled for March 22nd 2016 by 10 am at the Hotel Santiago in Praia. At the end of the electoral process, the AUEOM will issue a final report containing a detailed analysis of the conduct of the electoral process in Cape Verde Republic.
