At the initiative of the Heads of the observation Missions of the African Union and ECOWAS, the heads of observation and information missions of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA), the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF) and the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) met to exchange information and harmonize views on the electoral process ahead of the presidential and legislative elections of 21 February 2016 in the Republic of Niger. The Coordinator of the UN System also participated at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, the Heads of Missions commended the peaceful environment in which the electoral campaign took place. This indeed reflects the political maturity of the people of Niger and the entire political actors.
The Heads of Missions urge the political actors and the people of Niger to respect the legal provisions governing the elections of 21 February 2016, notably the relevant provisions agreed upon by the competent authorities.
In this regard, they urge the political actors especially the candidates to abide by the judgment of the Constitutional Court on the vote by witness (identification of the voters by witness).
The Heads of Missions appeal to the actors to respect the values and principlescontained in the code of conduct of political parties and independent candidates during election in Niger.
The Heads of Missions also encourage INEC to continue to intensify its efforts in creating the conditions for participatory, fair, peaceful and credible elections.
They also invite the Nigerien voters to come out massively to exercise their franchise in a calm and orderly manner.
