Mauritania is voting today to elect its president after last year’s coup. Accordingly to many online reports, the turnout of voters is high.
“A former military general who ousted this Islamic nation’s first freely elected president – Associated Press reports – is vying to become its legitimate ruler in elections Saturday to return power to civilian rule”. He is Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, “a front-runner among nine candidates on the ballot”, AP news agency reports.
Voter turnout appeared high, with queues forming in front of polling stations in the capital Nouakchott, though no official figures on the numbers of voters were yet available, according to earthtimes.org
