Today, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The Secretary-General appreciated Egypt’s leadership role in the Middle East peace process and underlined the need for rapid action in this area, both by advancing towards a Palestinian-Israeli peace agreement and reconciliation among the Palestinians.
He expressed his concern about the situation in Libya, and he counted on Egypt’s support for UN efforts to get an agreement there and to support the future Government of National Accord.
The Secretary-General praised the decision of the President to pardon 100 prisoners, including the Al Jazeera journalists. He also called on President Sisi to exercise leadership in protecting human rights and human dignity in Egypt and in the region.
