FIFA to improve World Cup ticketing system

FIFA says technical experts are working on improving the World Cup ticket selling system.

The slow system saw chaos erupt at ticket points where the first over-the-counter tickets went on sale across South Africa yesterday.

Half a million tickets are available in the fifth and final phase of ticket sales, but many of the fans who swamped the outlets on day one left empty-handed.

The police had to be called in to restore order and prevent people from being crushed in the queues.

World Cup ticket hopefuls in Cape Town expressed mixed reactions about operations at the ticket office in the Central Business District.

Hundreds of soccer enthusiasts stood in long queues since Wednesday afternoon to secure tickets for the showpiece.

Several people cited poor management and communication as some of the problems they experienced.

Many left empty handed yesterday afternoon as most tickets were sold out.

In several areas long queues were still visible as hopeful fans tried to snatch some of the remaining 120 000 category four tickets, exclusively made available for South Africans.

As a result of the overwhelming tickets demand, FIFA and the Local Organising Committee also decided to extend the operating hours at some of the ticket centres.
