COPE president Mosiuoa Lekota said he does not use blue lights to get to his destination faster – he says the blue lights he remembers were the ones when he was arrested and being transported to court and prison during the apartheid era.
Lekota gave his views on the controversy surrounding blue light convoys used by politicians and ministers at a Cope gathering in Hammanskraal yesterday.
He told the few dozen supporters who had gathered in the PHL Moraka High School that Cope was preparing for a conference in May where the party would elect leaders for the different positions.
The conference comes as the party gears up for next year’s municipal elections with Lekota saying they have already started their campaign by launching branches in different parts of South Africa.
“There are two reasons why I am here. We must build a strong Cope in Hammanskraal and launch our branches. They must be genuine branches that will stand for the people and represent them at our conference. We must get our people out the poverty they live,” said Lekota.
“In May, we will for the first time democratically elect a Cope president and silence our critics.” Lekota also took a shot at the lavish lifestyle of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.
He said Malema’s dress code had changed from when he first arrived on the scene “wearing tackies and now he wears expensive clothes”.
