Extra-Ordinary Meeting of Experts of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance (CAMEF)

WHERE: ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

WHO: Organised by the Department of Economic Affairs of the African Union, in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria

Objectives: The meeting will consider the following: proposals on the mechanisms for implementing the recommendations from the Report on Alternative Sources of Financing the AU; the Statute of the AMF; the technical study on the establishment of the Pan African Stock Exchange; and the Study Report on the African Integration Fund, with a view to finalizing them for consideration by the Seventh Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development taking place in Abuja, Nigeria, from 29 to 30 March 2014.

Expected Results: The Extraordinary CAMEF is expected to come up with the final recommendations on the items on the agenda for submission to the African Union Summit in July 2014.

Participants: Participants to the Conference will be from the Ministries of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of AU Member States.

Background: The Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development held in March 2013 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, and Decision Assembly/AU/Dec/486 (XXI) of the AU Summit of Heads of State and Government held in May 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, requested the African Union Commission to organize an Extra-Ordinary African Union Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance (CAMEF).

It is in this regard that the Commission is organizing an Extraordinary CAMEF to discuss the following issues: the mechanism of operationalization of the Report on Alternative Sources of Financing the AU; the Statute and Annexes of the African Monetary Fund (AMF); the Technical Study on the Establishment of the Pan African Stock Exchange; and the Study Report on the African Integration Fund.
