The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) says it has not begun any discussion around leadership succession in the ANC (African National Congress), denying reports it was working on a plan to stem the ascendance of the left in the party.
In a statement released at the weekend by the ANCYL, the youth league said it would “forever” stick to the principles of the organisation and would never isolate any of its leaders.
“When the ANCYL begins the leadership succession debate, it will neither be secretive, nor communicated to journalists through faceless people,” the youth league’s spokesman, Floyd Shivambu, said in a statement.
On Friday, the Mail & Guardian reported that the ANCYL was planning to weaken ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe — who is also chairman of the South African Communist Party (SACP) — through a strategy of constantly questioning his holding of the two positions.
The ANCYL statement was released as the ANC national executive committee (NEC) gathered for an annual meeting to finalise a programme of action for the party following President Jacob Zuma ’s 8 January ANC anniversary statement.
