4 April 2016 – International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

4 April marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. This day aims to raise awareness about landmines and the progress toward their eradication, and is a day that reminds us of the devastating effects of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW).

UNMAS South Sudan, in partnership with the South Sudan National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), will take part in a worldwide campaign to bring attention to mine action by holding a large awareness-raising event at the Nyakuron Centre in Juba on 4 April, as well as smaller events in towns across South Sudan.

The theme for the commemoration is: Mine Action is Humanitarian Action, which will feed into the Secretary-General’s “agenda for humanity” to be set at the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016. Linking mine action with humanitarian action promotes the lifesaving elements of mine action work and the enabling role it plays for other humanitarian interventions.

You are warmly invited to the Nyakuron Centre, Juba to commemorate the day with us, find out more about mine action in South Sudan and to join in the fun. We also have commemoration events taking place in Bor, Duk Padiat, Jalhak, Kodok, Melut, Pagak, Kapoeta and Torit .

The Juba event details are as follows:

Date: Monday, 4 April 2016

Time: 09:30am

Venue: Nyakuron Centre, Juba
